Implants - You Visit--What to ExpectBefore your first visit to the oral surgeon, it is necessary to come to our office two weeks before to have a stent made. In a fifteen-minute appointment, we will take an impression of the area that will then be sent to the oral surgeon. This stent guides the surgeon in placing the implant at the appropriate position and angle. Typically at the first visit to the oral surgeon, the doctor surgically "implants" the metal fixture (also known as an abutment) directly into the bone. A healing time of about 3-6 months is then needed to allow for the oral cavity to accept the implant and for the surrounding bone to grow over the fixture. If the tooth is not located in the front, you will need to wait several weeks before coming to our office to construct a temporary tooth to fill the area. It is important to wait in order to allow time for the implant to become fully integrated. Making a temporary is important to avoid shifting of the surrounding teeth, as they may move to close the gap from the missing tooth. After a 3-6 month period the doctor will uncover the gum area and allow a few more weeks of healing time. Our office will then take an impression of the area to prepare for the final restoration (i.e. crown) that will cover the tooth. And soon you can enjoy your beautiful smile once again with the utmost confidence.
