Root Canals

Every tooth in your mouth has one or more roots. Each root contains a canal filled with a pulp composed of blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves. This area is responsible for communicating pain. If the pulp becomes infected, a root canal may be necessary.

Symptoms frequently include:

  • Shooting pain that wakes you up in the middle of the night;
  • Intermittent pain; and
  • Sensitivity to hot and/or cold

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call our office as soon as possible. If Dr. Zane determines that root canal therapy is necessary, he will refer you to an endodontist who will remove the pulp and then seal the canal. This can be done in two visits. You should call our office to schedule an appointment two weeks after your final visit to the endodontist in order to place a filling in the treated area. Sometimes a crown may be needed to help provide support to the tooth after it has undergone root canal therapy.
